Female-Founded Dating App Is Making Dating Less Lonely

Chorus, a matchmaking platform where friends swipe for friends, has announced early sign-ups for their app, which is set to be released later this year. You can only swipe for other people on Chorus; the experience centers on friends helping friends. Chorus targets an older demo (ages 30+) and is the first dating-related app catering to people in relationships who are eager to play matchmaker for their single friends, who are tired of swiping. Chorus has received early-stage funding and the mobile app is set to release later this year.

It’s no secret that online dating in its current form has flaws. “Swiping culture" has notoriously reduced people to icons, flattening the way we view and treat one another, hence the popularization of terms like “ghosting.” The isolation inherent in online dating has also created unnecessary distance between single and coupled friends. There’s no easy way to share in the experience of modern dating, even when friends sincerely want to help. Meeting people has become a solitary activity rather than a communal one.  

“Friendship has always been fundamental to navigating relationships,” says founder and CEO, Emily J. Smith, “there's no reason that should stop just because everything is moving online. 

Online dating is taking over, and with no signs of slowing. Tinder alone boasts of 2 billion swipes per day. According to a recent study, dating apps have become the most popular way for heterosexual couples to meet, eclipsing meeting through friends for the first time. But  the prevalence of online dating has also increased feelings of depression and loneliness. A recent piece in the Atlantic explains, “as the influence of friends and family has melted away, the burden of finding a partner has been swallowed whole by the individual—at the very moment that expectations of our partners are skyrocketing.”

Chorus understands that online dating isn’t going away, but something fundamental needs to change. “By looping friends into the process,” Smith explains, “we hope to create a dating culture that’s accountable, fun, and, above all, human again.”
